Artist Statement
A desire to understand a place begins with learning to navigate without a map.
I am interested in the ideas of landscape. In particular, I am attracted to the natural landscape of the plains; the open fields stretching along crisscrossing rows out to the horizon. It is this horizon line the holds my attention. It is the line between foreground and background, where chaotic patterns meet the quiet calm nothingness.
I explore these ideas through drawings, print media, and installations that break down and simplify the complexity of the landscape into positive and negative spaces often concentrating on a specific mark, form or texture. My goal is not to create a mirrored image but an imprint, a sense of a place. For me, these places become a metaphor for identity, a way to orientate oneself to the direction we are traveling.
